Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Qajar dynasty papier-mache art from 19th-century Persia is recognised by its intricate hand-painted designs finished with protective lacquer. Popular items included pen boxes, mirror cases, and tool sheaths decorated with gilded florals, foliage, and historic scenes.

These items were crafted by layering paper paste and gesso over wooden or leather molds. Once dried and hardened, artists applied fine gold leaf, paint, and multiple coats of clear varnish or lacquer, often adding brass or steel mounts for functional tools.

Authentic pieces feature dense, delicate floral gilding, craquelure within the aged lacquer surface, and hand-fitted metal hardware. The underside and interiors often display natural age darkening and period construction techniques.

This piece can be displayed on a dark wood executive desk, positioned inside a glass display dome, or mounted within a velvet-lined shadow box frame to highlight the gilded lacquerwork as a focal point.

Keep the item in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, polishes, or solvents that could dissolve the clear varnish.
