Indian Pietra Dura Inlaid Marble Vase from the Raj Period Circa 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A truly exceptional late 19th early 20th century Indian vase hand turned in white marble. The vase is of bulbous shape, standing on a small stepped foot and finished at the top with a shaped, narrow neck and a pleasing flared rim.

Not only has this white marble vase been beautifully turned on its exterior, but remarkably, it has been brilliantly hollowed internally to give a consistent thin wall thickness of approximately 5mm throughout. (Very difficult to achieve with this fragile stone).

The vase has exquisite decoration, the finest we have ever offered for sale.

It has been profusely inlaid in foliate designs in semi precisious stones.

Around the body of the vase are four circular panels with floral foliate displays with beautifully detailed flowers and leaves worked into each circular panel.

Above there is a garland of flowers with buds and leafy stems. And to finish this magnificent vase, the rim is also inlaid with a garland of brightly coloured, linked flower heads.

The cut inlay is accurate work which has been done with great skill.

The artist has used beautifully coloured semi-precious stones such as lapis, turquoise, malachite, agate and also mother of pearl.

A truly incredible Indian Raj period work of art, circa 1910.

The vase is in excellent original condition with no damage or repair.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pietra Dura, known as Parchin Kari in the Indian subcontinent, is the decorative art of inlaying meticulously cut and polished semi-precious stones into marble base surfaces to create pictorial or floral designs.

These vessels are sculpted from white marble, predominantly sourced from Makrana in Rajasthan, and feature delicate floral inlays using semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper, agate, and carnelian.

Authentic period examples feature hand-chiseled recesses, tight seams between inlaid stones with minimal resin visible, subtle variations in stone colours, and soft surface wear consistent with age.

Display the vessel on a dark timber sideboard, mantlepiece, or within a minimalist alcove where the contrast highlights the bright marble and colourful stone work.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid acidic, harsh chemical cleaners, or moisture that might dissolve historical adhesives or degrade the natural marble surface.
