18th Century Original Brown Painted Hoop Back Windsor Chair

18th century
Description

This is a rare surviving all original 18th century Windsor chair. The chair is painted in brown paint which has worn away very attractively over the years giving the piece a great deal of character. The overall condition is very good although the back does have a slight weakness with an original copper banded repair. Which looks great and adds to the charm of the chair. Overall size is very practical with tall legs which is rarely seen as these chairs were often used on stone floors and worn down over time. Great vernacular piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A hoop back Windsor chair is a form of regional seating featuring a continuous steam-bent timber rail that forms an arch around the vertical back spindles. The design originated in England during the early 18th century as a durable form of vernacular furniture.

18th-century Windsor chairs were typically built using a combination of native hardwoods, such as elm for the shaped saddle seat, ash or yew for the steam-bent hoops and spindles, and beech for the turned legs. Early examples were frequently finished with dark paint, milk paint, or oil to unify the different timber species.

Authentic 18th-century Windsor chairs show evidence of hand-carved components, wedged tenon joinery where the legs pass through the solid seat, and uneven wear patterns on the stretchers and armrests. Original painted finishes often show distinct flaking, layered wear, and natural oxidisation in low-friction areas.

A painted Windsor chair serves as an accent piece in contemporary living spaces, dining areas, or entrance halls. Positioning the chair alongside neutral walls and modern minimalist decor highlights its structural silhouette and historic painted texture.

Preserving an original paint finish requires keeping the chair in a stable climate away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources. Light dusting with a soft cloth is recommended, avoiding chemical detergents, solvents, or harsh waxes that strip historical paint layers.
