Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fall front bureau is a writing cabinet featuring a hinged sloping flap that opens to reveal a fitted writing surface and interior compartments, set above a chest of drawers. Popularised in the 18th century during the Georgian period, it served as both a practical workspace and a storage piece for correspondence.

Georgian bureaus were typically crafted from solid native timbers such as oak or pine for the carcass, veneered with figured walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood. Internal drawers often featured dovetailed joints, hand-planed drawer linings, and hand-cast brass handles or escutcheons.

Look for signs of hand construction, including irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn backboards, and natural timber shrinkage lines. Authentic pieces from around 1750 frequently display brass drop handles, oak drawer linings, and bracket feet consistent with period craftsmanship.

A historic writing bureau functions as an accent piece in a home office, hallway, or living area when paired with modern artwork or contemporary lighting. The interior flap can be left open to display stationary items or closed to maintain a streamlined aesthetic.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, and colour fading.
