Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian fire baskets from the late nineteenth century frequently incorporated classical revival and Gothic elements, including urn finials, stud motifs, and cast lattice patterning. Designed to burn coal or wood, these baskets were constructed from heavy iron to withstand high heat while providing structured containment for solid fuel within open hearths.

Late Victorian fire grates combined cast iron components, such as decorative upright posts and detailed moldings, with wrought or cast iron crossbars. Parts were joined using heavy rivets or traditional mortise and tenon joinery in the metal to endure repeated thermal expansion and contraction.

Authentic period pieces display substantial weight, surface irregularities from traditional sand casting, and evidence of historical heat exposure, such as light surface oxidation or pitted iron. Authentic Victorian grates also feature thick structural bars and hand-finished joinery rather than modern uniform welds.

A Victorian fire basket can be placed inside an original or restored fireplace opening as a functional log burner or as a decorative element filled with birch logs. Modern installations sometimes incorporate custom bioethanol inserts inside the basket to provide flame effects without requiring a working chimney.

To preserve iron fire baskets, remove loose ash and rust using a stiff wire brush, taking care not to gouge the metal. Applying a traditional graphite-based iron paste or black lead polish restores the charcoal finish and protects the iron against moisture and further oxidation.
