Frederick Herman de Schomberg, 1st Duke of Schomberg and an unknown boy by and published by John Smith, after Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt Military commander born at Heidelberg of an English mother; served throughout Europe in various armies; accompanied by William of Orange to England, 1688; Commander-in-Chief in Ireland, 1689; was killed at the Battle of the Boyne.

Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique developed in the seventeenth century that enables the creation of subtle tonal gradations and deep shadows by roughening a copper plate with a metal rocker tool before smoothing areas to produce light.

Historical mezzotints were printed onto hand-made cotton or linen rag paper using oil-based inks applied from hand-worked copper plates.
