Late George III / Regency Inlaid Mahogany Caddy Top Chest of Drawers, c.1800–1820
A very attractive late George III / Regency mahogany chest of drawers, dating to around c.1800–1820. The chest is of straight-fronted form, with a caddy top, ebony stringing and a well-balanced arrangement of two short over three long graduated drawers. It is raised on elegant splayed bracket feet, the front feet giving the piece a particularly pleasing Regency stance.
The chest is constructed with a pine carcass and mahogany veneers, with good figuring to the drawer fronts and a lovely even colour throughout. The ebony stringing gives a crisp decorative detail without making the piece overly formal, while the original polish and well-developed patina give it the warm, mellow appearance expected of a genuine period chest. The brass ring handles are later replacements, in period style, and sit well with the overall character of the piece.
A handsome and very usable Regency chest, of good proportio
...ns and with a refined but understated appearance. Its relatively compact depth makes it practical for bedrooms, landings, dressing rooms or reception spaces, while the colour and patina give it strong decorative appeal.
Dimensions:
Width across main carcass: 91.25 cm / 35 7/8 inches
Width across splayed front feet: 94 cm / 37 inches
Depth: 45.25 cm / 17 7/8 inches
Height: 90 cm / 35 1/2 inches
Condition:
In good condition overall, with minor running repairs consistent with age and use. The chest retains its original polish, with good even colour and a lovely patina. The brass handles are later replacements in period style. General old marks, small knocks and signs of use should be expected, but the piece presents very well and is structurally sound.
