Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this Meiji Satsuma Earthenware Bowl to the 19th Century.

Kozan is a major and highly respected name in Japanese Satsuma ceramics. Works by Kozan are regularly sold by leading international auction houses, including Christie’s and Bonhams, and his name confidently belongs among the top ten most desirable Japanese Satsuma makers and decorators of the Meiji period. The present bowl clearly shows why: the faces are individually painted, the robes are carefully detailed, the gilt ornament is rich and controlled, and the whole composition has the refinement expected from serious Meiji-period Satsuma rather than commercial export ware.
Around the central scene are further shaped reserves with landscape and floral subjects, set within elaborate brocade-style grounds in gold, red, blue, turquoise and purple enamels. The exterior is decorated with a continuous floral band, making the bowl highly decorative from every angle.

The underside bears a red rectangular gilt signature panel reading Kozan. The bowl has the characteristic fine cream crackle glaze associated with Satsuma ware.
