Hexagonal Damascus Table

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

A Damascus table

The hexagonal top inlaid with geometric pattens in ebony and bone, above a frieze cut with silhouettes in the form of onion domes as characterised in middle eastern architecture, stands on turned legs, united by a stretcher in the form of the Seal of Solomon, ebonised and with inlaid decoration.

Damascus, circa 1900

The Seal of Solomon and the Star of David are very similar, the specific variation is how they interconnect, David is two triangles overlapped with one another to form a star, Solomon is two interlocking triangles to form a star, the same seal was used on Damascus steel, symbolic of the union of soul and body.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Damascus tables originate from 19th and early 20th-century Syrian woodworking traditions, characterised by geometric marquetry, mother-of-pearl inlays, and architectural arch motifs inspired by Islamic design.

Craftsmen typically used dense hardwoods such as walnut or fruitwood, decorated with hand-cut mother-of-pearl, bone, tin wire, and contrasting timber marquetry.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut, irregular mother-of-pearl tesserae, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and minor human variations across the geometric inlay patterns.

A Moorish side table serves as a decorative accent piece beside clean-lined modern seating or within a reading corner, introducing textural contrast and architectural interest.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth and keep the piece in a climate-controlled environment to prevent organic glues from drying out and lifting the inlays.
