George III Style Mahogany Two-tier Side Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A very elegant George III style mahogany two-tier side table, of refined proportions and superb quality throughout. The circular tiers retain beautifully figured mahogany tops with moulded edges, supported by a turned central column with a fluted urn-shaped section above the base.

The table stands on a graceful tripod base with shaped cabriole legs, each finely carved with acanthus leaf decoration to the knees and terminating in well carved pad feet. The carving is crisp and decorative, adding a strong sense of quality and craftsmanship to the piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century during the Georgian period, a dumbwaiter table was designed as a multi-tiered occasional table to hold condiments, desserts, or tableware, allowing diners to serve themselves without servants present.

These pieces were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-turned central columns, dovetail joints, and hand-carved tripod pedestal legs.

Authentic 18th-century pieces typically display signs of hand-planing on the undersides, natural wood shrinkage marks on circular tops, precise hand-carved motifs, and period-correct joinery.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to hold books, drinks, or decorative ceramics, effortlessly pairing historic timber tones with modern soft furnishings.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
