The wakizashi being worn together with the katana was the official sign that the wearer was a samurai. This one is late 18th century tang unsigned blade out of polish and showing some blemishes, unusual Saya, iron Tsuba superbly decorated, the tsuka very ornate, length in total 71 cm height 7 cm depth being 7 cm, reference BBC2. A Wakizashi is a traditional Japanese short sword worn by samurai, often as a companion weapon alongside the longer katana in a paired set known as daisho. Originating prior to the Edo period, it served both as a sidearm for close-quarters combat and as an official status symbol of the samurai class.

Wakizashi mountings, known as koshirae, typically feature a wooden scabbard, or saya, finished with protective natural lacquer. The hilt, or tsuka, is constructed from wood wrapped in ray skin, known as samegawa, bound with silk or leather cord alongside iron or copper alloy fittings.

Authentication involves examining the blade for traditional forging characteristics such as the temper line, or hamon, and steel grain pattern, or hada. Specialists also inspect the unpolished tang, or nakago, for maker signatures and check for age-appropriate wear and natural oxidisation on the metal fittings.

An antique Wakizashi is typically displayed horizontally on a dedicated wooden stand within a study, library, or minimalist living space. It serves as a focal sculptural object when placed on a desk, bookshelf, or console, integrating well with both classic dark wood interiors and contemporary spaces.

The forged steel blade requires periodic cleaning and a light application of mineral or traditional choji oil to protect against rust and moisture. Lacquered scabbards and delicate textile wrappings must be kept in climate-controlled environments away from direct heat, high humidity, and sunlight.
