Description

A lovely, rare, and delicate saucer shaped porcelain egg drainer with a shell shaped handle. Printed with the Fisherman pattern. Unmarked, c.1785.

It measures 8.2cm cm (3 1/4") wide (10.1cm (4") including the handle) and 1.5cm (5/8") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. Minimal handling wear. One tiny spot of discoloration to the underside.

Produced in Shropshire during the late eighteenth century, Caughley porcelain is renowned for introducing underglaze blue transfer-printed patterns to English soft-paste ceramics, heavily influenced by imported Chinese motifs.

These items were crafted from soft-paste porcelain and decorated using cobalt oxide pigment applied via copper-plate transfer printing before being coated in a clear lead glaze and fired.

Authentic pieces typically feature soft-paste translucency with a warm greenish-yellow tint when held to light, visible transfer seam joins, and occasionally painted or printed factory marks such as an S or C.

Smaller ceramic objects like egg drainers are best displayed on clear acrylic stands within glazed cabinets, mounted on plate racks, or arranged alongside other blue and white tableware on a sideboard.
