Originating in the early 19th century, japanned papier-mache trays were crafted by layering paper pulp and varnish to create durable decorative wares. They were frequently decorated with hand-painted scenes, imitation East Asian lacquerwork, and detailed gilding.

Moulded sheets of laminated paper or mashed paper pulp were saturated with adhesive, heat-cured, and soaked in linseed oil for strength. Afterwards, successive layers of dark asphaltum or varnish were applied, baked, and polished prior to receiving painted or gilded ornamentation.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit light to moderate craquelure on lacquered surfaces, minor edge wear, and hand-painted detailing rather than modern transfer prints. Additionally, genuine papier-mache feels dense and substantial compared to modern reproduction materials.

These trays can be displayed vertically on a plate stand on a sideboard, mounted on a wall using discreet plate hangers, or rested flat on a coffee table to hold decorative objects.

Keep the tray out of direct sunlight and high humidity environments to prevent cracking or warping of the lacquered substrate. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding water, detergents, or abrasive waxes that could strip original gilding.
