Gents Longines Wrist Watch, 1940

1920 - 1940
Description

Gents Longines wrist watch, 1940.

The watch has a calibre 12.68 hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Longines name, and it has the serial number 6,016,966 which dates it back to 1940.

The watch measures 32.5mm diameter excluding the later winding crown and the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition, just general light surface marks mainly to the back of the watch but nothing too serious.

The lens is in good condition (some natural light reflection showing in the photos).

The signed dial has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. Some light marking to the dial but very acceptable for a watch of this age.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century mens wristwatches typically feature functional, legible dials, often including a subsidiary seconds register at the six oclock position. Cases were generally compact by modern standards, measuring between 30mm and 35mm in diameter, with clean geometric lugs and acrylic crystals.

Cases were predominantly manufactured from stainless steel, solid gold, gold fill, or chrome-plated brass. Movements were mechanical manual-wind calibre engines featuring jewelled bearings, paired with leather straps or expandable metal bracelets.

Authentic pieces feature crisp dial typography matching period logo styles, precise movement serial numbers, and matching case stamps. The internal mechanical movement should bear the manufacturers name, calibre designation, and origin hallmarks.

A vintage dress watch offers classic proportions suitable for formal tailoring, business wear, or refined casual outfits. The neutral dial and leather strap provide a understated accessory that complements modern menswear.

Mechanical timepieces require regular servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. They should be kept away from water, strong magnetic fields, and extreme temperatures to prevent damage.
