Silk Embroidered Suzani, Uzbekistan, Circa 1850, 1.80m X 1.24m

19th century
Description

Worked in Bokhara, this lovely silk embroidered suzani dates to around 1850 or a little earlier. Woven in four panels and then sewn together, the size is quite unusual as it lies somewhere between the usual full-size examples and the so-called smaller 'Nim-Suzanis'. It is a very elegant piece. Ascending palmettes and meandering vines and leaves embroidered in coloured silks are interlaced on an ivory cotton background. The colours are lovely, including a subtle burnt orange, magenta, greens, light blues and yellows. The outlines of the leaves and the meandering vines are drawn in a lovely gold silk in chainstitch technique which gives the composition a light and luxurious appearance. Note the lovely borders with a further range of flowering motifs which complement the field perfectly. It is a delightful piece which would add colour and charisma to your interior. Cherished over the generations, the silk embroidery is almost perfectly intact. The cotton background has had some conservation work, but is generally in very good condition and stable. Professionally cleaned and lined.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a hand-embroidered tribal textile originating from Central Asia, traditionally crafted in Uzbekistan and neighbouring regions as part of a brides dowry.

Traditional suzanis were created using silk thread worked in couching or chain stitch on narrow strips of hand-woven cotton or linen fabric that were subsequently stitched together.

Authentic 19th-century suzanis typically feature hand-spun foundation cloth stitched together in narrow vertical panels, visible natural dye subtle shifts, and hand-worked floral roundels.

A suzani can be mounted on a wall as a focal art piece, displayed over the back of a sofa, or draped across the foot of a bed to introduce rich textile texture.

Antique suzanis require professional textile conservation cleaning and must be displayed away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and unbacked hanging mounts that strain the fibres.
