1871 Pattern Officer’s Cavalry Helmet – Duke of York’s Own Regiment of Yeomanry–white Metal & Gilt – Horsehair Plume – Circa1871-1890

19th century
Description

A scarce Victorian British officer’s cavalry helmet of 1871 Pattern Yeomanry form, attributed to the Duke of York’s Own Regiment of Yeomanry.

Constructed with a polished white metal skull fitted with gilt brass mounts, retaining its ornate crowned Royal Arms front plate within an oak and laurel wreath, complete with original style gilt chin scales and white horsehair plume.

A well-proportioned officer-grade example displaying the elegant late Victorian cavalry profile. The interior retains surviving original leather lining elements and the helmet presents attractively for display.

An increasingly difficult type of British military headwear to source complete and with strong visual impact.

Condition Report

Good antique condition overall. Original horsehair plume present. Gilt fittings and front plate appear period and well matched. Interior lining shows age-related wear and losses as expected.

There is a small stable age-related crack to the left side of the helmet body, visible on close inspection but not materially affecting display, see photos. Minor surface wear and evidence of historic polishing consistent with age and use.

Dimensions

Height: 37 cm

Width: 19 cm

Depth: 25 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The 1871 pattern cavalry helmet is a metallic ceremonial headpiece worn by officers in the British cavalry and Yeomanry regiments from the late nineteenth century onwards, characterised by a silver-toned or brass skull, front plate badge, and top horsehair plume.

These helmets were constructed from polished white metal or brass, embellished with gilt-metal badges, lined with leather, and fitted with natural horsehair plumes mounted onto cast metal sockets.

Authentic period examples exhibit die-stamped brass or gilt regimental insignia, original leather skull linings, era-appropriate oxidisation across metal joins, and period-correct manufacturing marks from official military outfitters.

Interior designers typically display military helmets on custom-made wooden or dark metal stands within glass cabinets, on dark wood bookshelves, or positioned as central accents on study desks.

Preserve metal military dress helmets by storing them in a climate-controlled environment, removing surface dust with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that erode gilded surfaces, and keeping horsehair plumes upright.
