Antique Turkmen Chuval, Teke Tribes, Akhal Oasis, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

This amazing Teke Turkmen 'chuval' (storage-bag) has to be seen and handled to appreciate the incredible fineness of weave. If I say it is like silk-velvet, that might be a good general description!

The beautiful cochineal-dye ground cointains three vertical columns of three Teke 'guls' (tribal crests) interspersed with minor guls, where the field gives the impression of disappearing under the borders and out into infinity. The bottom 'elem' or skirt contains stylised plants or trees.

Made during the early to mid 19th century by Teke tribes in the Akhal Oasis, the chuval is in very good overall condition albeit having a small tear in the upper centre which in my mind, doesn't detract from the overall quality of this fantastic piece, and two areas in the top right and left corners which have been repaired, probably due to the original tie-cords having put a strain on the corners of the bag when hung on the camels.

Chuvals were made in pairs with plain-weave backs and hung on the flanks of the camels during migrations. This chuval has lost its plain-weave back.

Size: 1.34 x 0.80m (4' 5" x 2' 7").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large nomadic storage bag traditionally crafted by Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, such as the Teke, for transport and interior tent decoration. Today, bag faces are often displayed as wall hangings or small accent rugs due to their rich geometric designs.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation. The vibrant red and dark tones are achieved using natural plant and insect dyes, predominantly madder root and indigo.

Authentic Teke weavings feature fine, dense asymmetric knotting, supple wool, and iconic octagonal Teke gul motifs arranged in precise grid patterns. The lower section usually includes a distinct geometric border panel known as an elem.

An antique chuval can be custom mounted or framed as wall art to serve as a focal point, or layered over larger neutral carpets to add warmth, colour, and historical depth to contemporary and traditional spaces alike.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres, and clean spills immediately with a damp cloth. Professional washing by an antique rug specialist is recommended to maintain the structural integrity and natural dyes.
