Important notice regarding frames – please read carefully.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian coastal watercolours typically depict British seaside landscapes, harbours, and maritime activities with a focus on natural light, atmosphere, and observational detail. Popular during the early 20th century, these works reflected a period of expanding coastal tourism and national interest in domestic topography.

Artists used water-based pigments ground with gum arabic binders, applied onto heavy cotton rag paper. These paintings relied on transparent washes layered over graphite sketches to build tonal depth and structural outlines.

Look for original period signatures, dates, graphite underdrawings, and naturally aged paper showing light toning or minor foxing consistent with period framing. Examining the paper texture under magnification reveals whether the piece is a hand-painted original or a printed reproduction.

Frame the painting with an acid-free mount and a minimalist oak or dark wood frame to bridge historic artwork with contemporary decor. Position the artwork on a gallery wall or above a console table to create a subtle focal point in living areas.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity, ideally mounted with UV-protective glass and conservation-grade backing. Avoid hanging paper artworks in kitchens or bathrooms where moisture fluctuations cause paper cockling and mould growth.
