Antique William IV Mahogany Lyre-form Music Stand C.1830

19th century
Description

A William IV mahogany music stand, the adjustable lyre-form book rest retaining its original folding ledge with page stays, flanked by pivoting brass candle branches and raised on a square telescopic stem with a hand-threaded wooden clamping screw above a ring-turned column set on a triform platform base.

A highly sculptural music room appointment, this stand provides an imposing focal point when positioned in a drawing room alcove or private study. The top can be folded and the height reduced for easy stowing or transit.

Very good antique condition, exhibiting an exceptionally rich patina with some surface wear consistent with age, noting a historic loss to the rim of the right-hand candle holder. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1830.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Britain during the 1830s, this style features a central sheet rest shaped like a classical lyre, often crafted from solid mahogany with brass accents, supported by a turned column and a carved tripod base.

High-grade dense mahogany or rosewood formed the primary structure, while brass was utilised for internal height-adjustment mechanisms, string details, and extending candle sconces.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned wooden components, period brass screw fittings, natural age-related patination on the timber, and traditional joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails on the tripod base construction.

These versatile stands function effectively as decorative display easels for large art books, prints, or manuscripts, placed alongside reading armchairs or within a dedicated library corner.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax sparingly along the grain; brass elements should be cleaned gently without abrasive polishes to preserve the historical patina.
