Antique Edwardian Gothic Revival Oak Church Chairs C.1911

1900 - 1920
Description

A matching pair of late Edwardian Gothic Revival oak church chairs, the architectural backrests with out-swept scrolled ears and lancet arches framing a central column pierced with chamfered trefoils, all set over solid quarter-sawn oak seats, pierced trefoil aprons and raised on square legs.

Retaining their original 1911 engraved brass presentation plaque, the chairs present a crisp, architectural silhouette, highly practical as a flanking pair in an entrance hall or on a landing.

Presented in very good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. Their construction reflects the honest, functional simplicity of the contemporary Arts & Crafts movement. Both chairs are structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1911.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture emerged in the mid-18th century and gained widespread popularity through the 19th and early 20th centuries, drawing visual inspiration from medieval architectural motifs such as pointed arches, quatrefoils, and trefoil tracery.

Ecclesiastical seating from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods was primarily crafted from dense hardwoods like English oak or pitch pine, chosen for durability, straight grain, and ability to take dark stains.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, crisp architectural carvings or cutouts, hand-finished surfaces with genuine age-related patination, and occasionally brass memorial or presentation plates.

These structured side chairs function effectively as architectural accent pieces in hallways, paired alongside minimalist console tables, or utilised as distinctive seating at dining setups.

Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and periodic applications of high-quality beeswax preserve the timber finish and patination while keeping the wood hydrated away from direct heat sources.
