Spongeware refers to earthenware ceramics decorated using cut sponges or root brushes to apply coloured glazes in floral or geometric patterns, popular throughout the nineteenth century.

These pieces were typically press-moulded or wheel-thrown from dense earthenware clay, coated in a white or cream slip, decorated with mineral-based pigments using natural sponges, and sealed with a clear lead glaze.
