Antique Marble Eagle Statue in Veined Carrara Marble, 19th Century

19th century
Description

A striking 19th-century marble sculpture of an eagle, carved from beautifully veined grey-and-black Carrara (white) marble ,a fine Italian marble known for its quality and natural contrast. The feathers are smoothly and delicately carved, and the eagle is fitted with vivid orange glass eyes that give it a lifelike presence. It stands on a solid stone-carved base that complements the figure perfectly.

This is a rare and highly unusual sculpture, with few, if any, known matching examples. The piece has great character and displays both charm and craftsmanship.

Symbolism of the Eagle

Across many cultures, the eagle is a longstanding symbol of power, freedom, and sharp vision. Its commanding stance and keen gaze make it a natural emblem of strength and authority.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century animalier sculptures are defined by realistic depictions of animals, hand-carved in fine stone or cast in bronze, reflecting the eras fascination with natural history and classicism.

Sculptors typically utilised fine white Carrara marble or alabaster for the main form, often incorporating glass or horn accents for features like eyes to enhance realism.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-carving tool marks, natural stone veining, soft wear along raised edges, and age-appropriate accumulation of dust in recessed details.

A carved stone sculpture creates architectural weight when styled on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside contemporary artwork and textured ceramics.

Marble should be dusted with a dry soft cloth and cleaned using only pH-neutral soaps with warm water, keeping the surface free from acidic liquid or harsh chemical cleaners.
