Superb Antique (Ca. 1870) Bronze Statue ‘Jockey & Groom’, John Willis Good

19th century
Description

Fine antique (ca. 1870) bronze statue ‘Jockey & Groom’ by John Willis Good, produced via the sand-casting method. Signed ‘J. Willis Good’ on the base and mounted on a green marble stand. 33cm high x 35cm wide (including stand) x 15.5cm deep, weight 7.8kg.

Excellent condition with a lovely dark brown patina.

John Willis Good (1845-1879), a pupil of Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), who was Queen Victoria’s favourite sculptor, was the only English counterpart to the French ‘Animalier’ sculptors. He made his Royal Academy début in 1870, and over the following decade showed a series of equestrian pieces in bronze and terracotta. His works are of fine quality and display exceptional skill and naturalism. He produced only 10 to 15 models in his short and tragic life (he committed suicide), which were cast in bronze, silver and silver-plated bronze, often by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian equestrian bronzes are sculpted representations of horses and riders created during the nineteenth century, characterised by high anatomical accuracy, detailed tack, and subjects drawn from horse racing and hunting.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax process or sand casting methods before being hand-finished with cold chiselling and chemically patinated to achieve deep tonal finishes.

Authentic period bronzes display precise tool work, natural wear to the patina on high points, sharp foundry markings or sculptor signatures, and substantial weight appropriate to solid metal casting.

Position the bronze on a dark wood mantelpiece, console table, or library desk where light can highlight the sculptural contours and patinated surface.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a light layer of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the patina from moisture and oxidisation.
