Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tea caddies were developed in the seventeenth century to store loose tea leaves securely, as tea was an expensive imported commodity. By the Edwardian era, silver tea caddies evolved from practical locked boxes into decorative tabletop containers featuring elaborate relief patterns, polished caps, and stylized figural motifs.

Edwardian tea caddies were primarily constructed from sterling silver, comprising 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Craftsmen utilized repousse and chasing techniques to hammer raised relief designs from the interior and detail the outer surface.

Authenticity is verified by official assay hallmarks stamped into the silver body. These marks typically include the lion passant for sterling quality, a city mark indicating the assay office, a date letter specifying the year of manufacture, and a registered makers mark.

A silver tea caddy can be styled atop a wooden sideboard, curated within a glazed cabinet, or incorporated into a dining room tray display alongside contemporary glassware. Combining oxidized silver textures with warm timber surfaces creates a balanced decorative focal point.

Clean silver hollowware using a soft cotton cloth and specialized, non-abrasive silver polish formulated to remove tarnish without stripping detailed surface chasing. Store the item in a dry environment inside a tarnish-resistant cloth bag to minimise atmospheric oxidation.
