Set of Four Fine Sheraton Revival Inlaid Mahogany Salon Chairs, C.1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

Set of Four Fine Sheraton Revival Inlaid Mahogany Salon Chairs, c.1900

A superb set of four Sheraton Revival inlaid mahogany salon chairs, dating to around 1900. Elegant, refined and beautifully drawn, the chairs have shaped heart-form backs with carved and pierced central splats, fine cabriole front legs and extensive inlaid stringing throughout. The design draws on the grace and lightness of late 18th-century Sheraton furniture, with a particularly delicate silhouette and excellent decorative detail.

The chairs have a wonderfully poised appearance, with sweeping backs, slender proportions and crisp, well-executed carving. The mahogany has good colour, while the inlaid stringing gives definition to the frames and emphasises the quality of the design and craftsmanship. They would make a very attractive set of salon, drawing room, bedroom or occasional chairs.

The seats are sprung and have been recently reupholstered using traditional methods in a neutral woven fabric, which works well with the mahogany frames and could be easily changed if a different covering were desired.

Dimensions:

Height: 90.75 cm / 35 3/4 inches

Width: 46 cm / 8 inches

Condition:

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture, produced primarily between the 1890s and 1910s, draws inspiration from Thomas Sheratons 18th-century designs. It is characterised by slender proportions, neo-classical lines, intricate marquetry, and refined mahogany or satinwood timber.

Edwardian salon chairs were typically crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, often featuring inlaid motifs of satinwood, boxwood, or mother-of-pearl, alongside traditional horsehair padding and woven upholstery fabric.

Authentic pieces display crisp hand-carved details, fine marquetry inlay flush with the wood surface, authentic hand-cut dovetails or traditional joinery, and natural patination consistent with late Victorian or Edwardian manufacturing techniques.

Antique salon chairs can be incorporated as accent seating in living spaces, positioned beside a fireplace, used in pairs within a hallway, or placed at the ends of a modern dining table to create visual contrast.

Maintain mahogany woodwork by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping with a soft cloth along the grain, keeping furniture away from direct heat sources, and spot-cleaning upholstery with specialist fabric cleaner.
