This charming mid-19th-century oil painting by Dutch artist Henri van Wyk (1833-1889) depicts an imagined gathering of amateur painters absorbed in the pleasures of art and observation. It''s after a work by the celebrated French painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891).
 
Within a dimly lit studio interior, three figures gather around an easel. A young painter leans forward with intense concentration, brush poised delicately against the canvas, while two richly dressed companions observe the work in progress with interest. Van Wyk has altered Meissonier’s original through colour, most notably in the luminous blue coat of the seated gentleman, whose satin-like costume becomes the visual anchor of the composition.
 
The appeal of such paintings during the 19th century lay partly in nostalgia. Across Europe, artists and collectors increasingly looked back toward the Rococo world of the 18th century as a refuge from modernity. Meissonier became one of the most admired painters ...
