Antique Microscope Slide Cabinet

19th century
Description

A good quality microscope slide cabinet dating from the mid to late 19th Century. It is made from mahogany and comes with its original working key. The door opens to reveal 13 drawers, each with numbered bone handles and plaques which can be written on to act as labels for the drawers. Each drawer is lined with blue velvet and divided internally into three rows, each capable of holding 8 standard microscope slides, giving each drawer a capacity for 24 slides and meaning the cabinet can hold 312 slides! The bottom section of the cabinet has had the drawers removed, presumably to make space for larger pieces of equipment such as lenses or bowls etc.

The nature of the cabinet means that it could be used for a variety of things and not just microscope slides - it would display a collection of coins very well too.

It is in good condition for its age. There are some knocks and marks around the cabinet and the mahogany has faded over time but there are no major damages. The drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, microscope slide cabinets were crafted specifically to store prepared glass slides horizontally, ensuring biological, botanical, and geological specimens remained secure and protected from light.

These cabinets were typically built from stable hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak to minimise warping, featuring shallow cedar or mahogany trays fitted with brass keyway escutcheons and small bone knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass mortise locks, stepped slide runners inside the side walls, and original numbered labels or turned pulls on the drawer fronts.

A desktop specimen cabinet functions as an intriguing architectural accent on a study desk or bookshelf, serving as practical storage for small modern items such as jewellery, coins, or art supplies.

Store the timber cabinet away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to avoid cracking, and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood finish while cleaning brass hardware gently.
