The group is executed in variegated soapstone and related soft hardstones in cream, celadon-green, russet and darker tones, producing an attractive layered effect. The openwork base imitates stylised clouds and scholar’s rock formations, creating strong visual rhythm and depth throughout the composition.
Particularly attractive is the contrast between the pale polished figures and the darker pierced rockwork centrepiece, while the varied stone colours and theatrical arrangement give the piece strong cabinet presence. Decorative Chinese export carvings of this scale remain highly desirable for Chinoiserie interiors and collectors of Asian decorative arts.
