Large Chinese Carved Jadeite Figure with Lotus, Late Qing / Early Republic

19th century
Description

A large and highly decorative Chinese carved jadeite figure, dating to the late Qing / early Republic period, circa 1880–1920. The figure is carved from an attractive pale green stone with warm honey-brown natural tones, creating a particularly refined colour contrast. The natural variation of the jadeite has been used with real artistic sensitivity: the softer green areas form the figure and central body of the composition, while the warmer brownish tones enrich the surrounding leaves and lotus forms.

The subject is a young figure holding a lotus, seated within a bold arrangement of large carved leaves and flowing plant forms. In Chinese symbolism, the lotus is associated with purity, harmony, renewal and good fortune. Here the motif is treated as a full sculptural composition rather than a simple decorative emblem. The figure appears to emerge naturally from the surrounding foliage, giving the piece a strong sense of movement and depth.

The quality of carving is excellent. The face, hands, robe folds, leaf veins and small botanical details are all carefully worked. The stone has very good translucency: when lit from behind, the figure glows through the body of the carving, giving the object a luminous depth and confirming the quality of the material. This is a substantial piece, weighing 748 grams without the stand, with a height of 15 cm without the stand and 18 cm including the stand.

The fitted wooden stand was made specifically for this figure. Its carved openwork and plant motifs echo the botanical carving of the jadeite itself, making the whole object read as a complete display composition.

The condition is very good. There is one neat repair to the lotus stem and a small, discreet chip to the top of the lotus/stem. The main figure, body, face, hands, leaves and base of the carving are otherwise in excellent condition.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Carvings from this period often feature figurative subjects, deities, and naturalistic flora rendered with undercut details. Artisans incorporated the natural colour variations and inclusions of the jadeite boulder directly into the composition.

These figures were carved from solid jadeite or nephrite hardstone using rotary tools and mineral abrasive pastes. Custom bases were carved from dense hardwoods such as rosewood or zitan to mirror the contours of the stone.

Authentic period pieces display soft hand-polished surfaces rather than high-gloss chemical finishes, alongside minor tool marks in deeply undercut areas. Natural inclusions, colour zoning, and fitted wooden stands showing appropriate age-related wear are key indicators.

Place the sculpture on a console table, mantelpiece, or shelving unit against a neutral backdrop to emphasize the stones tone. Directional lighting enhances the translucent qualities and detailed carving of the material.

Dust the stone regularly with a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid exposure to harsh household chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extreme temperature changes, while dusting the wooden stand separately.
