Antique Silver Spider Pin Cushion

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a wonderful rarity - an antique sterling silver spider pin cushion.

Hallmarked on the side of the body for Birmingham 1909 it has no maker's mark. The silver is in excellent condition although the legs, as can be seen, are slightly wonky. The cushion has been replaced, not really a surprise given its age, and is a little clumsy, but certainly not the worst I have seen.

He's quite sweet and will make an amazing addition to any collection.

Dimensions:

Length: 4.5cm

Width: 7.5cm

Height: 4cm.

The pound coin is for size reference.

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Novelty pincushions shaped like animals, insects, and everyday objects became popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Craftspeople designed these functional decorative silver items primarily as collectable sewing accessories and vanity novelties.

These items were typically cast in sterling silver or silver plate, featuring textured detailing along the legs and head. The abdomen portion was hollowed to hold a fitted velvet or silk cushion for securing sewing pins.

Authentic examples usually bear British hallmarks or makers marks stamped onto the underside or legs. Original cushions typically display natural age-related wear to the velvet or silk fabric.

This small object functions well as a decorative accent on a desk, dressing table, or styled bookshelf alongside books. It can also be incorporated into a curated display case or curio tray.

Gently wipe the silver surfaces with a dry polishing cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that can damage the internal cushion. Keep the fabric portion dry and out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
