Chippendale Revival Carved Mahogany Leather-top Wine or Lamp Table, C.1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

Chippendale Revival Carved Mahogany Leather-Top Wine or Lamp Table, c.1900

A well-proportioned Chippendale Revival wine or occasional table in mahogany, dating to the late Victorian / early Edwardian period, circa 1900. The circular top is fitted with an inset green leather surface, attractively aged and tooled, and is framed by a finely carved and pierced foliate gallery with shell and scroll motifs, giving the piece strong decorative presence without appearing heavy.

The top is supported on a turned baluster stem with gadrooned knop, rising from a carved quadriform base with four outward-swept cabriole legs. Each leg is enriched with acanthus carving and terminates in a carved pad foot. The carving throughout is crisp and well judged, reflecting good quality workshop production of the period, and the table stands with pleasing balance and stability.

An elegant and versatile piece, suitable for use as a wine table, lamp table or occasional table, equally at home in a traditional or eclectic interior.

A full set of additional images is available on request.

Dimensions (approximate):

Height: 71.25 cm (28 in)

Diameter: 72.25 cm (28 1/2 in)

Condition:

In very good, usable condition. The table is structurally sound and sturdy, with no looseness to the joints. The mahogany retains a warm, even patina with minor surface marks and wear consistent with age, including a few odd marks and blemishes to the frame as shown in the photographs. The leather top shows gentle, honest signs of use while retaining good colour and decorative tooling. Lightly cleaned and waxed, ready for immediate use. As with all period furniture, subtle evidence of age and use is present.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale Revival wine tables are small accent tables produced around the late 19th and early 20th centuries that emulate the 18th-century furniture designs of Thomas Chippendale. They typically feature tripod bases, carved pedestals, and decorative rims designed for holding drinks or small lamps.

These pieces were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, selected for its fine grain and suitability for intricate carving. The tabletop surfaces frequently incorporate embossed leather inserts framed by carved timber edges.

Authentic revival pieces display hand-carved decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, piecrust edges, or scroll feet alongside late Victorian or Edwardian construction techniques. Natural ageing on the underside, faint surface wear, and genuine patination on the timber and leather indicate authenticity.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa to serve as an accent surface for a modern table lamp, books, or drinks. The rich mahogany tone and leather detail add warmth and historic texture to modern neutral colour schemes.

Dust the timber surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to protect the wood finish. Keep the leather insert clean using a slightly damp microfibre cloth and apply a specialized leather conditioner periodically to prevent drying and cracking.
