Georgian Carnelian Agate Brooch in 9ct Gold Scottish Hardstone Jewellery

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Carnelian Agate Brooch in 9ct Gold c.1830 Scottish Hardstone Jewellery

A beautiful Georgian carnelian agate brooch dating to circa 1830, set in tested 9ct gold and showcasing the refined craftsmanship associated with the Scottish agate-working tradition.

This antique hardstone brooch features a bold square cabochon-cut carnelian with exceptional natural colour variation, ranging from warm amber and burnt orange through to rich oxblood red tones. The stone displays attractive translucency and natural internal patterning, giving it depth and vibrancy in changing light.

Hand-crafted during the transitional Georgian to early Victorian period, the brooch retains its original early pin and clasp fitting. The elegant minimal gold mount allows the natural beauty of the agate to remain the focal point, reflecting the understated sophistication of early 19th-century British jewellery design.

Georgian Scottish agate jewellery remains highly sought after among collectors for its individuality, craftsmanship, and use of richly coloured natural hardstones.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian Scottish hardstone jewellery refers to pieces crafted during the Georgian era (17141830) that incorporate locally mined Scottish agates, jaspers, and carnelians into gold or silver settings.

These pieces typically feature polished native quartz varieties such as carnelian, band agate, or moss agate, mounted in low-carat gold or sterling silver settings with hand-cut claw or collet mountings.

Authentic Georgian items display hand-cut stone profiles, crimped or hand-formed claw settings, early pin mechanisms such as C-clasps or long simple pins, and gold alloys typical of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

A historical brooch can be styled as a focal point on modern coat lapels, fastened to silk scarves, or worn near the neckline of a tailored blazer.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and lukewarm water, avoiding chemical immersion or ultrasonic cleaners that may damage organic inclusions or alter historical gold finishes.
