Fine Antique Italian Shell Gold Cameo Brooch Depicting Antinous Vertumnus, C.1860

19th century
Description

A fine antique Italian shell cameo brooch, circa 1860, depicting Antinous as Vertumnus, after the celebrated classical sculpture known as the Antinous Braschi, now in the Vatican Museums, Rome.

Antinous, the favourite of Emperor Hadrian, was one of the great idealised beauties of the ancient world and became a popular subject in neoclassical and Grand Tour art. Here he is shown in profile, wearing a wreath of vine leaves, fruit and a pine cone, attributes associated with abundance, fertility and the god Vertumnus.

The cameo is finely carved in high relief from sardonyx shell, with excellent detail to the hair, floral wreath, facial features and drapery. The creamy white carving stands beautifully against the warm brown shell ground.

The mount is a simple and elegant 9ct gold frame, stamped to the reverse. It is fitted as both a brooch and pendant, allowing it to be worn in either manner.

A particularly attractive and desirable example, with a rare classical subject and a very wearable size.

Date: circa 1860

Origin: Italy

Material: Sardonyx shell, 9ct gold

Dimensions: 34 × 28 mm

Condition: Excellent. A couple of very slight natural shell lines are visible only when strongly backlit; mentioned for accuracy. No damage or restoration.

During the 19th century, shell cameos grew immensely popular as souvenirs brought back from Grand Tours across Italy. Craftsmen in Naples and Rome carved relief portraits and classical mythological subjects, such as Antinous or deities, into sea shells to satisfy the Victorian fascination with antiquity.

Shell cameos are sculpted from natural marine shells, such as helmet or conch shells, which feature natural contrasting colour layers. The carved relief layer is typically set into low-carat or high-carat gold, silver, or pinchbeck mounts with traditional pin fittings.

Authentic shell cameos display subtle natural variations in colour and curvature, along with fine tool marks under magnification. Unlike moulded plastic or glass imitations, real shell feels cold to the touch initially and reveals distinct, undercut layers between the carved white relief and the darker background shell.

In addition to being worn on coat lapels, scarves, or high collars, antique brooches can be integrated into interior decor. They are often displayed in small framed velvet shadow boxes, glass cloches, or arranged on decorative trinket trays in dressing areas.

Shell is an organic material that can dry out or crack if exposed to harsh chemicals or extreme heat. Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and mild soapy water, drying thoroughly immediately afterward; applying a tiny drop of mineral oil once a year helps preserve the shells natural moisture.
