The silhouettist Augustin Edouart often included the family dog in his silhouette conversation groups and so he practised cutting dogs of all shapes and sizes. This larger wolf-like dog though must have been intended as a stand-alone portrait. The silhouette has been extracted from the artist’s Scrapbook and has been presented in a period maple veneer frame. The frame has some areas of loss to the veneer; there is a stamp of authenticity within and on the backing boardFinding himself exiled in England with a wife and young family to support, Augustin Edouart opened a shop in Cheltenham selling French curios and artificial flowers but the venture was short-lived. He had also tried his hand at creating hair pictures of animals and landscapes.
