Antique Military Campaign Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

An outstanding antique military campaign chest of drawers. This dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of amazing quality and is a very useful size, with lots of storage space. This sits on beautifully turned legs and the chest comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport, as is typical of these military chests.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the teak retains a gorgeous patina and colour tone, with various small marks here and there remaining beneath the polish.

The original locks have had a new key cut for them that works for all the locks, except the lock on the upper right drawer. The lock on the upper right drawer is a bramah lock which is virtually unpickable, that shows that the officer this was made for must have been very high ranking.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign chests were developed in the nineteenth century for British military officers stationed abroad. Designed to disassemble into two portable sections, they allowed officers to transport their personal belongings during deployments while maintaining functional storage.

These chests were typically constructed from durable hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or camphorwood to withstand humid climates and transit. Brass corner brackets, flush brass handles, and strapwork were integrated flush to the wood to prevent damage during movement.

Authentic pieces feature a two-part split body, flush-mounted brass hardware, and recessed handles. Look for evidence of hand-cut dovetail joints, brass corner straps, and unvarnished interior drawer linings often made of pine or cedar.

A campaign chest serves as functional storage in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, pairing well with contemporary artwork or textured textiles. The geometric structure and brass hardware complement both traditional and understated modern decor styles.

Clean the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a beeswax polish periodically to preserve the finish. Avoid aggressive metal cleaners on the brass fittings to retain the natural patina that develops on the metal over time.
