Fine Quality Matched Set of Twelve Mid 19th Century William Ivth Mahogany Dining Chairs, Attributed to Gillows

19th century
Description

A matched set of twelve mid 19th century William IVth (circa 1830) fine quality mahogany dining chairs attributed to Gillows, all twelve chairs identical apart from the front legs of four having a slightly different design.

This set of chairs each consist of a moulded shaped top rail with carved fan and scroll decoration to the corners with shaped uprights and lower back rail.

The deep buttoned backs and seats upholstered in a green water silk fabric in good condition with moulded seat rails below.

This leading down to the front legs, eight chairs having a bulbous turning to the top with a carved and tapered leg with a turned foot below, the remaining four chairs are turned to the top with a tapered and reeded leg with a brass castor below, the rear legs all of outswept design.

Gillows of Lancaster and London, established in around 1730, was an English furniture making company based in Lancaster and also London, it continued under this name until 1903 when it became Waring & Gillow after merging with Warings of Liverpool. Gillows of Lancaster and Waring & Gillow both had a very good reputation and are renowned for producing fine quality pieces of furniture.

Reference: a near identical design of this chair from the ‘1823 Sketch Book’ can be found in the book ‘Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730-1840’ by Susan E Stuart, Page 221 Plate 204

This set of chairs are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home, the fabric is in a good condition apart from a few small blemishes – if required these could easily be recovered by an upholsterer once purchased.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, this design era serves as a bridge between Regency elegance and early Victorian substantiality, characterised by bold carved motifs, turned fluted legs, and scrollwork.

High-grade mahogany was predominantly used for frame construction due to its dense grain and dark colour, often paired with horsehair padding, brass castors, and woven wool or silk upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature precise joinery, finely executed carved scrolls, stamped inventory numbers or maker marks on the underside of seat rails, and original brass castors.

Pair a full set of antique mahogany chairs with a contemporary minimalist dining table or a sleek stone surface to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep timber surfaces clean using traditional beeswax polish applied sparingly along the grain, avoid placement in direct sunlight or beside central heating radiators, and dry-clean fabric elements using methods suitable for antique textiles.
