Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th-century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century, Regency twin pillar dining tables feature two central support columns with splayed legs, providing legroom unimpeded by perimeter legs alongside removable extension leaves.

These tables were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers laid over solid timber bases, accented with brass toe caps and castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned central columns, historical wear on pedestal feet, hand-cut joinery on supporting runners, and original brass fittings showing natural oxidisation.

Positioning a polished dark wood table alongside contemporary upholstered seating or modern sculptural pendant lighting creates an intentional contrast between historic timber and clean modern lines.

Maintain the surface by wiping up moisture immediately, keeping the table away from direct radiator heat sources, and applying a quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain.
