19th Century French Provincial Oak Farmhouse Table

19th century
Description

charming and characteristic antique 19th century French provincial oak farmhouse table. The farmhouse table has a rectangular five plank top, with single frieze drawer to one side. Raised on square tapering legs with signs of some historic repairs, adding to its charm. It can seat four to six chairs as a wonderful looking kitchen table or alternatively it lends itself as a nice size desk, as demonstrated in the pictures. In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age as can be expected. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks and scratches, along with evidence of historic woodworm to top (pictured), however this is now long gone and has been fully treated as a precaution. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French provincial furniture refers to pieces crafted in regional France outside of Paris during the 18th and 19th centuries. These designs adapted formal Parisian styles into functional furniture tailored for countryside homes and agricultural estates.

These tables were constructed from locally sourced solid hardwoods, such as oak, fruitwood, or chestnut. Construction techniques feature mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegging, plank tops with cleated ends, and simple frieze drawers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular plank widths, original wooden pegging, and natural wear patterns along the feet and drawer runners. Look for historical drawer construction, original timber, and a surface patina developed over time.

A French oak table functions as a central feature in modern dining spaces, open-plan kitchens, or home offices. Combining the piece with contemporary dining chairs creates a balanced contrast between clean lines and textured timber.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excessive moisture. Applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice per year along the wood grain helps preserve the timber finish.
