A Victorian Chippendale Revival Wall Mirror

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking late Victorian Chippendale Revival wall mirror beautifully crafted in richly coloured mahogany and dating to circa 1890.

The mirror is surmounted by an exceptionally decorative pierced crest centred with a finely carved eagle with outstretched wings, framed by elegant scrolling fretwork and foliate detailing. The frame retains a wonderful deep reddish mahogany tone with beautifully shaped corners and flowing pierced ornament throughout. Particularly attractive is the contrasting shell inlay to the lower apron, adding an additional decorative flourish typical of high-quality late Victorian revival furniture inspired by 18th century English design. The mirror retains bevelled edge glass which displays gentle age and character, complementing the warmth and richness of the mahogany frame beautifully. An elegant and highly decorative piece, ideal for a hallway, drawing room, bedroom or cloakroom interior.

Condition: Good antique condition overall with age-related wear consistent with age and use. Minor surface marks and light wear to the frame. The mirror plate displays some light foxing and age-related character. Later hanging wire to the reverse.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale Revival mirrors draw design elements from 18th-century models popularized by Thomas Chippendale, featuring fret-cut scrollwork frames, pediments with crest motifs like phoenixes, and decorative wood marquetry.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine cores, fitted with bevelled glass plates, and occasionally embellished with gilt metal or boxwood inlays.

Authentic Victorian examples demonstrate 19th-century joinery techniques, aged timber backings, hand-finished fretwork scroll edges, and natural light oxidation on the original silvering or mirror glass.

Position the mirror above a sleek console table or mantelpiece to create a focal point that contrasts historical woodwork with contemporary wall paint and minimalist decor.

Dust the detailed fretwork regularly with a soft dry brush or cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the timber finish while avoiding direct spray of glass cleaners onto the wooden surround.
