Antique Early Stoneware 17thc Rhenish Large Bellarmine Jug with Tiger Glaze. German C1640-50.

I know I often say this about various items I buy.....but forgive me for repeating myself....again one of the best 17thc Bellarmine Jugs, I have bought in 30 years of dealing...it stands an impressive 15.50" inches high ( 39.4cms ) with a width and depth of 9.00" inches (23cms)...made from stoneware with a desirable "tiger glaze" and is in perfect condition...remarkable when you consider its age..! These collectable items were used to export wine to Europe, England and many more countries in the 17thc from Rhenish in Germany and usually when the wine was drunk and the bellarmine emptied it would have been broken up or thrown in the river....you do find a lot of broken bellarmine shards on the Thames foreshore....the bellarmine is in original condition with no restoration and is decorated with a moulded bearded mask above three roundels with flower heads in...a wonderful item to own albeit for a short time...!

A Bellarmine jug, also known as a Bartmann jug, is a salt-glazed stoneware vessel originating from the Rhineland region of Germany in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These vessels typically feature a round bulbous body, a narrow neck, and a relief carving of a bearded male face.

Rhenish stoneware was crafted using dense local clay fired at high temperatures. The distinct mottled appearance, often referred to as a tiger glaze, was achieved by throwing salt into the kiln during firing, which reacted with the silicate in the clay to form a hard, impervious glass glaze.
