Victorian Mahogany Cellarette / Wine Cooler

19th century
Description

A handsome Victorian mahogany cellarette of rich colour and elegant form. The hinged, panelled lid lifts to reveal its original stoneware‑lined interior — ideal for keeping wine or bottles cool, as intended in the 19th century. The exterior is beautifully crafted, with shaped mouldings, panelled sides and bold carved feet that give the piece real presence. The mahogany has developed a warm, glowing patina, highlighting the quality of the timber and the cabinetmaker’s skill. Sturdy, well‑proportioned and full of character, this is both a decorative and practical piece. In excellent antique condition, with only minor marks and wear consistent with age and use—this is both a functional piece and a stylish talking point, perfect for enhancing any interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellarette is a standalone wooden cabinet or chest designed to store and cool wine bottles, popular in 18th and 19th-century dining rooms prior to modern electric refrigeration.

Victorian cellarettes were typically crafted from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, often lined internally with lead or zinc to hold ice and protect the exterior timber from moisture.

Authentic 19th-century cellarettes feature hand-carved decorative elements such as acanthus leaves, original brass castors, dovetail construction, and rich natural patination on mahogany surfaces.

An antique cellarette functions well as a low side table, drinks storage chest, or decorative focal point in a dining room, hallway, or living space.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to nourish the mahogany, ensuring the item remains away from direct radiators or damp conditions.
