Pair of Antique Swedish Neoclassical Solid Elm Armchairs

19th century
Description

An impressive and beautifully designed pair of antique Swedish neoclassical solid elm armchairs. They are in the Gustavian style, they were recently imported from Sweden and date from around the 1890-1900 period.

The quality is outstanding, and they are of lovely proportions. The solid elm frames are beautifully shaped, they are very comfortable. The arm rests scroll over nicely at the front, the front legs kick out in a beautiful sabre shaped design. The paws of the front feet are beautifully designed and ebonised, one of the tiny rounded carved pieces has come off at some stage, this is barely noticeable as the section is ebonised like the rest, it is seen in the images.

We have had the frames re-polished and they have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The grain patterns and colour tones of the wood are gorgeous, they are in excellent overall condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swedish Neoclassical furniture, prominent in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, relies on classical architectural proportions, clean geometry, and understated elegance. It frequently features native light timbers like elm and birch rather than heavy imported mahogany.

Solid elm armchairs from this period typically utilise mortise and tenon joinery for structural stability. Elm timber was chosen for its dense, interwoven grain which resists splitting under tension in curved framework.

Authentic pieces feature balanced proportions, gentle arm curves, classical splayed or tapered legs, and natural timber graining. Look for traditional joinery marks underneath the seat frame and evidence of historic hand-planing.

Position these armchairs as a pair opposite a modern neutral sofa or alongside a minimal side table to highlight their sculptural timber frames. Neutral upholstery allows the warm timber tones to complement both modern minimalist and traditional decorative schemes.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax annually to protect the original finish. Vacuum upholstery gently with a brush attachment and keep the chairs away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
