Description

A fine quality 19th century (circa 1878) French bronze figure of a Boxer dog supported on rouge marble base signed Prosper Lecourtier (1855-1924).

This bronze consists of a Boxer dog tethered to a wooden post with a collar and chain, the post with attached sign ‘Prenez guarde au Chien’ translating to ‘Beware of the Dog’ resting on naturalistic oval base and all supported on moulded rouge marble base.

The bronze is signed to the base ‘P. Lecoutier 1878’ and also has the inscription ‘Beaux Arts 1878’ which is probably the year this figure was exhibited at The Salon, there is also an engraved wording of ‘N.CHENEAU a DIJON’.

Prosper Lecourtier (1855-1924) was born in France and studied sculpture under the celebrated animalier sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet.

He exhibited most years from 1875 to 1924 at the prestigious Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in Paris, earning notable recognition with a third-class medal in 1880, a second-class medal in 1879, and a first-class medal in 1902, he also received a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.

An example of this bronze figure can be found in the book ‘Animals in Bronze’ by Christopher Payne, page 230, plate D81.

This bronze figure is in excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home or collection.

Description

The Animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France, characterized by artists who specialized in creating anatomically precise sculptures of animals. Pioneers of this style focused on realistic muscular tension, naturalistic poses, and expressive depictions of domesticated and wild species.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting method in bronze, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details. They were finished with chemical patinas to produce rich brown tones and frequently mounted onto polished marble or slate bases.

Authentic pieces generally display crisp, hand-chased details in the hair or fur, an incised artist signature, and sometimes foundry marks or inscriptions. Authentic aged patinas show subtle wear on high-relief areas rather than uniform surface spray.

A bronze sculpture acts as a grounding focal point when displayed on a wooden mantelpiece, styled inside a minimalist bookcase, or positioned on an executive desk alongside contemporary art and polished brass accessories.
