Japanned Chinoiserie Chair, Papier-Mâché and Wood, with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay, Regency Taste
A decorative late 19th century japanned chair in the Regency taste, finished in black lacquer and richly adorned with chinoiserie decoration and mother-of-pearl inlay. The shaped back is particularly elegant, with flowing lines and finely worked panels inset with iridescent floral motifs, set against a ground of gilt detailing and traditional japanned finish.
The construction appears to be a combination of wood and composition, with elements of papier-mâché beneath the lacquered surface, typical of Victorian japanned work. The seat is caned and of generous proportion, providing visual lightness and contrast to the dark frame. The overall design is refined and highly decorative, intended as much for display as for use, in keeping with the nature of such pieces.
A charming and characterful chair, well suited to occasional or decorative use, adding interest and contrast within both tradit
...ional and more eclectic interiors.
Dimensions:
Height: 81.5 cm (32 in)
Width: 43.5 cm (17 1/8 in)
Depth: 50 cm (19 3/4 in)
Seat Height: 43.5 cm (17 1/8 in)
Condition:
Structurally the chair is generally sound, though there is a small amount of play in the joints. There is damage to the front right corner (knee) of the seat frame, with associated loss to the japanned surface and underlying material. The lacquer throughout shows age-related wear and characteristic craquelure, particularly to the back, consistent with its construction. The chair remains stable but is best considered suitable for light or occasional use rather than regular seating.
