Mahogany Bergère Armchair

19th century
Description

A fine quality mahogany bergère armchair, retaining its original cane work throughout the back, sides and seat. The chair is raised on slender tapering front legs with outswept rear legs, united by a clean lined seat rail and framed with finely figured mahogany of rich warm colour and attractive grain.

The shaped open arms terminate with subtle scroll ends and are supported by turned and fluted uprights above carved corner blocks decorated with stylised floral motifs. The gently swept back and balanced proportions give the chair an elegant and understated appearance while remaining highly comfortable and practical for everyday use.

The chair is currently fitted with loose button upholstered cushions in a soft olive green crushed velvet, which contrast beautifully against the warm mahogany frame and natural cane panels.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bergere chair is a French style of deep, comfortable armchair featuring an exposed timber framework with enclosed sides that are typically upholstered or fitted with woven cane panels.

Traditional Bergere chairs are constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, beech, or walnut for the frame, alongside hand-woven natural rattan cane and upholstered fabric cushions filled with horsehair or down.

Authentic period pieces exhibit traditional joinery like mortise and tenon joints, natural wear patterns on the timber, hand-tacked upholstery, and original hand-woven cane work rather than modern machine webbing.

Style a mahogany Bergere armchair alongside neutral modern sofas to create contrast, or position it in a quiet corner with a floor lamp to serve as a classic reading nook.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the mahogany from fading and the cane from drying out. Clean the rattan gently using a damp cloth or soft brush, and polish the timber frame with natural beeswax.
