Rare Ernst Wahliss Austrian Terracotta Relief Plaque – “Refugee Monkey Family in America” Satirical Wall Plaque C.1900–1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare Ernst Wahliss Austrian Terracotta Relief Plaque – “Refugee Monkey Family in America” Satirical Wall Plaque c.1900–1920

A rare and highly unusual antique Austrian terracotta relief wall plaque, produced by the renowned Carl Ernst Wahliss Factory, dating from approximately 1900–1920. This remarkable and large-scale decorative plaque combines exceptional craftsmanship with fascinating social satire, making it an outstanding collector’s piece and conversation item.

Modelled in high relief, the oval plaque depicts a humorous and highly detailed scene of a family of monkeys in luxurious dress and surroundings, seated at a café while examining advertisements relating to emigration to America by sea from Spain. Rich in wit and period social commentary, the composition reflects the playful satirical style popular during the late Austro-Hungarian Art Nouveau era.

Executed in beautifully blended shades of green and brown, the relief displays excellent depth, texture, and expression throughout. The plaque is impressed to the reverse with the factory mark:

“Made in Austria Ernst Wahliss Turn-Wien”

together with the incised model number 181.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bohemian and Austrian ceramic manufactories produced high-relief terracotta plaques featuring allegorical, narrative, and satirical scenes. Influenced by Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements, studios such as those in Turn-Teplitz created detailed wall chargers that blended fine craftsmanship with contemporary cultural commentary.

These plaques were typically cast using press-moulding techniques with fine-grained terracotta clay to capture intricate sculptural details. After firing, the pieces were finished using cold-painted pigments, bronze patinas, or slip washes to simulate metalwork or textured finishes.

Authentic period plaques usually display impressed makers marks, shape numbers, or studio stamps on the reverse, such as those from Ernst Wahliss or Amphora. Additionally, genuine turn-of-the-century pieces exhibit fine moulding definition, natural surface wear, and authentic patina aging around high-relief areas.

A terracotta relief plaque works effectively as a focal feature within a gallery wall or positioned in a study or library setting. Mounting the plaque against neutral, dark, or textured wall surfaces creates contrast and highlights the dimensional relief details.

Terracotta with cold-painted or patinated surface finishes should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners, water, or abrasive detergents, as moisture can compromise cold-applied pigments and patinas.
