A 1930'S Bestlite Lamp

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Hobo Design
Description

A Robert Dudley Best ‘Bestlite’ table lamp. Marked ‘Bestlite’, with curved chrome arm, cream lacquered shade and matching circular base.

Originally designed in the 1930s, the Bestlite has become one of the most iconic examples of early modernist lighting. The clean lines and industrial influence keep it feeling incredibly functional, whilst the soft cream finish gives this example a much warmer and more decorative feel.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed by Robert Dudley Best in 1930, the Bestlite was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement, combining functional industrial engineering with clean geometric lines, famously gaining prominence when used by Winston Churchill.

Original task lamps from this era typically feature weighted metal bases, tubular brass or chrome-plated steel stems, and spun aluminium or steel shades finished with durable enamel paint.

Authentic early production models feature stamped maker marks near the mechanical joint or base, heavy cast internal counterweights, precise ball-and-socket key joints, and period-correct wiring pathways.

Position the lamp on a modern executive desk, side console, or bedside table to add functional task lighting while introducing a subtle architectural highlight to the room.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, wipe enamelled metal using a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, and avoid abrasive chemical polishers on plated or painted surfaces.
