The scene is set in a deep mountain valley, with a broad dirt path or roadway in the lower center foreground.
The foreground contains several human and animal figures, including two central pedestrians conversing and a smaller group with cattle near a building on the right. To the left of the path, a cluster of mature deciduous trees with dense green foliage stands behind a wooden fence. Two traditional Swiss chalets with gabled roofs are situated in the middle ground, one on either side of the valley. The background features a large, dark mountain mass on the left and a snow-capped peak visible in the far distance through the center of the valley. The lighting suggests late afternoon, with soft shadows cast from left to right and a pale, cloud-streaked sky above. The painting measures approximately 81.5 centimeters in height by 66 centimeters in width.
