Japanese Antique (Late 19thc) Pair Gilded Bronze Statues, Samantabhadra & Manjushri Bodhisattva

19th century
Description

Japanese Antique (late 19thC) pair gilded bronze statues, depicting Samantabhadra and Manjushri Bodhisattva of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes the Bodhisattva ideal, where practitioners vow to attain enlightenment to save all sentient beings, rather than seeking only individual liberation. Each statue measures: ca. 26.5cm high x 21cm wide x 12.5cm deep, weight 3kg (total 6kg).

Good condition with age related wear and verdigris.

Samantabhadra and Manjushri are two of the ‘Eight Great Bodhisattvas’ in Mahayana Buddhism, often flanking Shakyamuni Buddha to represent the duality of practice and wisdom. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In Mahayana Buddhist iconography, Samantabhadra and Manjushri represent practice and wisdom respectively, frequently flanking the Buddha as a traditional triad.

Craftspeople utilised lost-wax casting for bronze bases, applying fire-gilding or mercury gilding to select areas such as drapery and crowns to create visual contrast.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces feature precise metal chasing, naturalistic casting details, uneven surface wear on gilded areas, and natural dark oxidisation.

Placing a pair of gilded figures symmetrically on a console table or bookshelf provides balance, texture, and visual interest within contemporary curated spaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners, polishes, or moisture that could damage delicate surface gilding.
