Alexander Kogan was a leading figure in international Russian publishing, with a career spanning Berlin, Palestine, and the United States.
The volume was printed by Dr. Selle & Co. A.G., Berlin, during the early days of their operation (1921–1932). Produced amidst the severe economic conditions of 1922 Germany, it was executed as a luxury, hand-crafted object for a limited audience. This is Copy No. 11 of a limited edition of 600 copies (specifically, one of the 300 copies issued for Great Britain and the Colonies).
The large folio comprises 240 pages and 68 separate plates (52 in colour), featuring a frontispiece portrait of Bakst by Amedeo Modigliani. It is printed on heavy-stock textured handmade watercolour paper (type of Fabriano) with uncut edges, and retains its original slipcase.
The half-title features a handwritten dedication: “Dem hochverehrten Herrn E. Buren zur freundlichen Erinnerung. London 6/5–1925. Wladimir Poliakoff.” Wladimir Poliakoff (Vladimir Polyakov-Baidarov, 1890–1952), a prominent Russian émigré, WWI pilot, and opera singer, was the father of Marina Vlady, widow of Vladimir Vysotsky.
